The Ghan

This extraordinary 2,979-kilometre train journey goes from southernmost Adelaide to Darwin, Australia's northernmost tip.

3-day luxury train journey with The Ghan

The Ghan runs from Adelaide via Alice Springs in the "red" heart of the Australian continent to Darwin and back. The train owes its peculiar name to camels imported from Afghanistan, which in earlier days were used to transport goods in this region. The Ghan departs Adelaide around noon, travels north via the Adelaide Plains through the green hills of Flinders Ranges. On day 2, you will wake up in a completely different environment. During the morning stop in Marla, you will enjoy a stunning sunrise over the outback. During the afternoon, The Ghan arrives in Alice Springs, in the middle of the Red Centre, where the deep red earth touches a cobalt blue sky; an inspiration to Aboriginal painters for centuries. Here you can book several excursions. On day 3, you drive through a varied landscape. Before The Ghan arrives in Darwin, a stop will be made in the town of Katherine. Here you can admire the subtropical nature and choose from several excursions.
